On a world scale, Nylon-6 accounts for the largest share of synthetic reinforcement of heavy-duty tires. In Asia the Nylon-6 volumes dominate any other reinforcement material by far. This dominance results from the specific properties that Nylon 6 brings, especially in the segments of heavy-duty bias ply Truck & Bus, Industrial, Off the Road and Agricultural tires. From the abundant availability of Nylon-6 fabric, a wide variety of fabric properties and qualities can be sourced. Whilst some fabric suppliers focus on strength, others excel in high modulus or low shrinkage. To the tire manufacturer, the suitability of a fabric for both tire manufacturing and tire performance clearly depends on the balance of these properties.
The high strength and toughness properties have brought Nylon 6 its widespread application in high performance bias ply tires. Especially in regions with tough road conditions, in off road situations and both also in combination with high loading, bias ply tires are called for. Within the Truck & Bus (T&B) segment the tire requirements differ between long haul and regional use, whereas those are again different for tires destined for Off-the-road (OTR), Industrial or Agricultural use. The list of tire property requirements for various tire segments may have similar items but they will be weighed differently. The final balance of tire properties is the end result of the fine interplay between rubber compounding, tire design, tire construction and reinforcement properties.
Nylon-6 is the most competitive material for demanding bias ply tires.
